Why thinking too Much is a problem

In many ways as a society we celebrate those people that seem to think to much. The absent mind professor would be one example. This archetype is a brilliant mind that which is so deeply locked in thought that they are careless about the world that is around them. But, thinking too much is actually a serious problem that severely limits both the quality of our lives and the way we experience the world. Firstly, thinking too much is a problem because we have little control of the thoughts that are entering our mind. We don’t choose the thoughts that come into our mind and often these thoughts are unwanted. They cause us to feel stress, anxiety or heartache. In many cases this constant thinking can lead to health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, headaches, and gastrointestinal disorders.

Secondly these thoughts take us our of the present moment and don’t us allow us to truly experience our lives. Thoughts are usually either of things that have happened in the past or concerns or desires we have for the future. They rarely concern what is happening to us in this present moment. But the fact is that these thoughts are not real. Things that happened in the past no longer exist. Thoughts of the future concern events that may never even occur. Thus when we thinking too much we are taking ourselves out of reality.

 The Power Of Meditation

Meditation is a specific method which has been proven to still the mind. It is the single best practice to teach you how to observe the thoughts that enter your mind without judgement and to achieve a state of stillness. After all, it is these emotional judgements which actually cause us to feel pain. If we have financial concerns for the future, it is the emotional judgement we place on these which give cause us to worry. Essentially it is our “perception” which causes the stress. Eventually with meditation we are able to find a find a place of stillness where constant thoughts no longer intrude.

Meditation doesn’t have to be Complex

Still The mind

Meditation doesn’t have to be a complex practice. It can be as simple as focus on your breathing or a single word or phrase. To start meditation practice simply find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed for the next ten minutes. Sit comfortably and close your eyes. Start to concentrate on your breathing and observe the breath flowing in and out of your body. Do not try and force your breathe, simply breathe naturally. If a thought enters your mind, notice it without judgement, and then allow it to float away. Many people benefit from using a “mantra” to focus their mind. This is a single word such as “ohm” or “one” that you can say silently or aloud to yourself. This word or phrase should be repeated until the end of the meditation session. This simple practice is meditation in its essence.

If you practice meditation on a daily basis you will notice that thoughts start to hold less power over you. The concerns you have for the future and the past will enter your mind and pass with less judgement. Over time you may find that you are approaching a stillness where you are no longer experiencing these thoughts at all. When we are unclouded by constant thinking we are able to enjoy our lives in a much deeper sense and truly see the world around us.
