Wisdom stories from all over the world. This is the fourth in the series. Make Me Obey You (Wise Shorts Ep. #4)
Master Bankei was different from other teachers. He didn’t quote sutras, nor did he indulge in scholastic dissertations. Instead, he spoke directly from his heart into the hearts of his listeners. Large audiences gathered to hear him speak.
Unfortunately, this fact angered a priest of the Nichiren sect, because his adherents left to hear about Zen from Bankei. The angry priest went to the temple to confront Bankei, and debate with him.
“Hey, Zen teacher, whomever respects you will obey what you say, but a man like myself does not respect you. Can you make me obey you?” The priest sneered, in front of the entire audience.
Bankei remained calm. “I will show you,” he said smiling.
Haughtily, the priest pushed his way through the crowd to Bankei.
“Come over to my left side,” Bankei said.
The priest obeyed.
“Oh, how about my right side? We’ll be able to talk better if you are to my right.”
The priest proudly stepped to the right.
“’You see,’ observed Bankei, ‘you are obeying me and I think you are a very gentle person. Now sit down and listen.
