Mantra meditation can be practiced by anyone and at any time. The power of mantra meditation is it focuses our mind so that it is no longer cluttered with distracting thoughts. This allows us to relax, center ourselves and create a deeper sense of awareness. Below you can find a step-by-step guide to the best way to practice medicine mantra meditation and your own home.

Step One – Choosing your mantra

The most popular and simple mantra is the word Om or Aum. This is believed to be the sound that was made at the start of the universe or what we would call the big bang. Many Westerners prefer to use a mantra that is more familiar. The words One or Love are both popular mantras used by Western speakers. But, it is possible to use any word that you want for your mantra. It just needs to be something that has meaning to you and is simple to say. If you find a particular word or phrase resonates with you when you should use it. Do not get too caught up in the practice of trying to find the perfect mantra. It is better to get started with a simple mantra as suggested above then spend a lot of time selecting the right one.

Step Two – Choosing the right time

There is no one right time to practice mantra meditation. But, generally it is best to practice mantra meditation in the morning just after working or in the afternoon between the hours of four and six o’clock.

Step Three – Finding the right location

Mantra meditation can be performed in any location. However, it is recommended that you choose somewhere that is quiet and that you won’t be disturbed. This is particularly important when you are beginning and liable to be distracted easily. Some people like to practice mantra meditation out doors. Good locations are at the beach or in the park first thing in the morning. But most people practice mantra meditation indoors. Find a quiet room where you will not be disturbed during your mantra meditation. If you have other people in the house, such as family members, then you might want a select a time such as first thing in the morning or late in the evening when everyone else is in bed.

Step Four – Getting comfortable

Next you will find somewhere comfortable to sit. Some people prefer to sit on the ground or on small pillow. Others prefer to set in a comfortable chair. Do not lie on the ground as you forming your meditation.

Step Five – Starting your meditation

To begin with close your eyes. Focus your attention on your breathing and relax. Notice as the air goes in and out of your body. Feel the gentle rise and fall of your lungs. Once you are feeling relaxed start to silently repeat your mantra to yourself. Continue to repeat your mantra over and over in your mind.

Step Six – Chanting your mantra

If you feel comfortable with the saying mantra out loud, you can start to chant it now. Start by saying it quietly at almost a whisper and then gradually increase the sound. It is recommended that you say it slowly and softly at first.

Step Seven – What to do when your mind wanders

As you are repeating the mantra you may notice that your mind is beginning to wander. If this happens bring your attention back to your mantra and your breathing. It is normal to get distracted or for your mind to wander when performing mantra meditation. That you are not able to keep with your word or phrase the entire time does not mean that you’re a bad meditator. In order to be successful with mantra meditation is simply need to notice when your mind is wandering and bring your attention back to your mantra.

You can start your mantra meditation by practicing for only five minutes at a time. Over time trying to build up to between 10 to 20 minutes every day. The more consistent you can be with your mantra meditation the more effective it will be. As you end your meditation allow yourself to return slowly back to waking consciousness. This will usually take a couple of minutes.

It is important not to make mantra meditation more complex than it needs to be. Mantra meditation is simply the act of repeating your word or phrase. The only thing you have to do is bring your mind back to the mantra when you noticed that you have become distracted.
